Abstract     Pesticides are a variety of chemicals that are used to protect plants from different undesirable plant or animal pests. In modern plant production, they have been applied on regular basis. Unfortunately, the target species selectivity of pesticides is not as well developed as might be hoped for, and poisoning of humans, wildife, and environment occur (too) frequently. Intoxications attributed to pesticides have been estimated to 3 million cases of acute, severe poisoning annually, with as many or more unreported cases. In Slovenia are available only data of those intoxications where the hospitalization was required. The data are collected by The Institute of Public Health (IPH) of Slovenia: in the 8-year period 1988-1995, there were registered 455 intoxications, on average 57 cases annualy. According to WHO data from 1990, annually some 220.000 deaths have been caused by intoxication with pesticides worldwide. The average death rate in Slovenia has been 28 people annually (IPH data). In the Poison Controle Center of Medical Center in Ljubljana, which covers approximately one third of the population of Slovenia, in the last decade, on average, 11 grown-up people intoxicated by pesticides were hospitalized annualy: halt of them were intoxicated by organophosphates. In the last few years the number of hospitalised patients acutely intoxicated by pesticides is decreasing, probably because of the use of formulations causing less acute intoxications, which in turn could be treated on the out-patient basis. The usefulness of pesticides is indubitable. But the people around the world are worried, being aware of the acute toxicity of pesticides and none the less of their known and unknown late toxic effects on the humans and the environment.
