Abstract     The collection of hematological research samples was carried out in the group of top sportsmen coming from the following four disciplines: basketball, skiing, swimming and cycling. The research included 64 adult sportsmen. The aim and hypothesis of the research was to draw a comparison of blood status parameters (number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes, erythrocyte indices: MCV, MCH, MCHC, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate) with orientational referential values applied in the evaluation of parameters in Slovenian population and development of such parameters for top sportsmen. The presumption according to which the analysis results obtained with the sample of Slovenian sportsmen would cover a specific area, which would still be located within the framework of orientational referential values, proved to be true. The results do not deviate typically from those obtained through the measurement of the same parameters of Slovenian population. Of all analyzed hematological parameters, the most significant deviations occur in the group of swimmers. In relation to the analyzed hemogram parameters, the most evident deviation was recorded with the MCHC parameter. Some of the parameter values eventually exceed the upper limit of orientation scale. The research work was conducted throughout 1996 in the hematological laboratory at the Faculty of Sport in Ljubljana.
