Abstract | Iodine is a microelement, essential to normal human and physiology, especially to thyroid development and function. However, iodine intake is sufficient (150-200 ug a day for adults) only in afew areas of Europe. mostly the deficiency is compensated for by salt iodizing. Iodine-rich mineral waters contain more than 1 mg/l.Also, it has been proven that the iodine from some of them is absorbed in the intestines and built in thyroid hormones. The research team conducted a prospective stuy which enrolled 14 healthy volunteers who had consumed a liter of mineral water Sicheldorfer a day for three weeks. The which contains substantially less iodine. During the period of drinking iodine-rich mineral water, serum concentration of thyrothropin as well as iodine elimination in urine were significantly increased. There indicate a potential value of mineral water Sicheldorfer as a substitute iodine source in iodine-deficient areas and in salt-limitating diets as well as a part of preventive measures from introducing radioactiove iodine into the thyroid. | |
