Abstract     The contribution presents a part of research on infants' playing activity. It was conducted on 20 Slovenian and 23 Croatian infants aged 18 and 24 months. Each infant was videotaped at home when playing alone for three minues with each of four of the standard toys. The recorded material was coded within a 30 second time period. The coding system consisted of variables describing emotional, social and object- activity aspects of infants' behavior. The structural level of palying actions and their content were determined in each interval of a play unit. Within the symbolic play units the following symbolic means of the infants' representations were analyzed: the symbolic object of substitution, symbolic motor activity, mental representative and speech. No structural and contentual differences in regard to the playing actions were found between the infants' of the two cultures. Significant cross-cultural differences were confirmed regarding to the infants' behavior while playing. They are best described by the first discriminant function - activity vs. passivity. The relation between the playing activity and the quality of a playing object is best described by the second discriminant function- complex vs. simple play.
