Abstract     At the beginning of the 20th century there were established several racial and constitutional theories of personality and body language. They were most popular in Germany, where racism was most widely spread. Their authors stressed the racial determinedness of psychic and physical traits, that was supposed to be recognizable by the studying of the physiognomic and constitutional characteristics of the members of different races, and by the observation of their expressive behaviour. There appeared a lot of racial classifications and their precise descriptions. Still, none of them was based on serious empirical proofs. Their authors referred to their own intuition and tried to protect themselves from any criticism of their conceptions by reproaching the critis lack of talent and intuitive abilities. Their theories could be considered the expression of their having been burdened with racial prejudices. Besides, they are extremely speculative and full of conceptual fictions.
