Abstract     The subject of the dissertaion is the general and professional orientation of students of nursing care and health education at the University of Ljubljana. The theoretical part describes the university education of nurses in the Anglo-Saxon world. The development of education is shown for Great Britain and the United States of America. Different levels of education for health care, the public image of nurses and the nature of nurses' self-image are presented. The empirical part asks whether there are any differences among students of nursing care and health education regarding their views on current social and living conditions, and personal and professional orientations in the future. The author is interested in whether there are differences in their orientation towards a professional career, towards working with people, towards educational work or research work, and in terms of how they see their professional status in society and in the future. Data gathered from a survey of 118 students of health care and health education showed some statistically significant differences regarding general values and professional orientations. With the development of education and health care activities, nurses in Slovenia will also have the change of education for academic titles.
