Abstract     Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common infection in humans. More than half of the world population is infected, but less than 20 % of them develop serious clinical illnes. My PhD research work consists of several studies dealing with the importance of bacterial infection with H. pylori in gastritis, duodenal ulcer disease and the influence of infection on local immurllty. I wished to asses the frequency of H. pylori positivity in patients with gastritis in Slovenia, and especially to asses the differences in local immune response between H. pylori positive and negative gastritis patients. We also evaluated differences in local immune response between H. pylori positive patients with duodenal ulcer disease as compared to patients with H. pylori positive non-ulcer dyspepsia. In the years 1992 and 1993 I wished to find out the difference in chronic duodenal ulcer patients' clinical course in dependence of treatment strategy (classical H-2 blockers compared with specific antimicrobial treatment). In the same group of patients I tried to asses the use of follow-up of IgG anti H. pylori levels after H. pylori eradication during two year follow-up. The most important part of my research work was the clinical and endoscopic follow-up of 63 patients with chronic duodenal ulcer disease after H. pylori eradication during four year follow-up. In the same group of patients we studied the reversibility of gastritis and we tried to asses the interobserver agreement between three senior pathologists in the assessment of gastritis reversibility using Sydney system criteria. In the first research we found out that 82.9 % out of 94 patients on the routine upper GI endoscopy had the infection with H. pylori. The early diagnosis of infection with a homemade rapid biopsy urease test had equal accuracy to commercial rapid biopsy urease test Yatrox. Patients with H. (trunc. at 2000 chars)
