Abstract     Despite favorable trends during the last ten years the prevalence of caries in Slovenia (DMF teeth in 12-year old children in 1994 is 3.4), still beats the average of the developed European countries. The analyses of underground waters, of whole-day meals as well as of data of fluorid-containing preparations sale show that the intake of biologically disposable fluorids is below the optimal daily amount and that the low fluorid levels, especially in drinking water (0.01-0.03), play an important ethiologic role in the caries incidence of our population. The analyses about possible implementation of systematic addition of fluorids (questionnaire about salt addition to food, possibilities of domestic production of fluoridated salt, possibilities of biologic monitoring and epidemiological follow-up of dental fluorosis and discussions among profesisonal bodies) show that Slovenia has social, medical and organizational conditions for the implementation of fluoridated table salt. It was suggested to the competent health authorities that they accept on the basis of standards (250 mg KF/kg), already in use in France and Switzerland, measures and regulations that would make possible safe implementation of fluoridated table salt to the market at a simultaneous control (monitoring of total fluoride intake by assessing urinary excretion and epidemiological evaluation of the implemented public helath measure).
