Abstract     It is the aim of this work to calculate the compressive loading stress in the articular layer of the human hip allowing for small deviations from the sphericity of the femoral head and of the acetabular shell. The femoral head and the acetabular shell are assumed to be shaped as rotational elipsoids with arbitrary semiaxes. In this case the compressive stress delta can be expressed analitically. If the deviation from the sphericity is small, it is obtained that delta = delta0.cos gamma(1 + 3 ( delta R / over r)/sin2/ gamma), where delta0 is a constant, gamma is the angle between the stress pole and the point of the observation, delta r is the difference between the semiaxes lenght of the acetabular ellipsoid, and r is the average lenght of the semiaxes of the acetabular ellipsoid. If both, the femoral head and te acetabulum are assumed to be spherical, the known dependence delta = delta0.cos gamma (3) is recovered.
