Abstract     An image segmentation method is proposed which combines two attractive tools: mathematical morphology and active contours. The method operates in two main stages, the second being optional in some cases. Contours are first coarsely approximated by means of morphological tools, these initial contours then evolve under influence of geometric and grey level informations. Three dedicated examples are presented for illustration of the method in the biomedical field.
