Abstract     Background. The sleep-wake cycle is the most evident circadian phenomenon, which critically affects the work performance. In this review we described a contemporary view on some sleep phenomena that are important for understanding of the sleep needs and consequence of sleep deprivation. They include processes in the brainconnected with the sleep-wake cycle and sleep phases, and the functionof sleep. Attentionis paid to describe the influence of the environment on the quality of sleep, particularly the physical and mental activity, the temperature of the environment and the noise. An analytical model describing the influence of the duration of sleep or rest on thesleep deprivation is followed, including a theoretical concept with a few solved problems in comparison with the contemporary empirical findings. Conclusions. We conclude with some advises for a good sleep.
Summary     Izhodišča. menjava budnosti in spanja je najbolj očiten cirkadiani pojav, spanje poleg tega bistveno vpliva na pripravljenost za delo. V ta namen smo podali sodobni pogled na nekatere procese v spanju, pomembne za razumevanje potreb po spanju, kakor tudi za razumevanje posledic pomanjkanja spanja. Gre za delovanje možganov, ki je povezano z menjavo budnosti in spanja in posameznih faz spanja ter funkcijo spanja. Posebej smo opisali, kako vplivajo na spanje nekateri dejavniki iz okolja, kot so telesni in umski napor, temperature okolja in hrup. Sledi analitični model za analizo vpliva trajanja spanja ali počitka na pomanjkanje spanja, ki vsebuje teoretični koncept z nekaj rešenimi primeri in s primerjavo s sodobnimi empiričnimi ugotovitvami. Zaključki. V zaključku navajamo nekaj nasvetov za dobro spanje.
