Abstract     Adaptability to heat in the elderly was investigated by 3 series of experiments on older male (OM) and female (OF) and younger male (YM) and female (YF) groups. 1) Thermoregulatory responses to gradual changes in the air temperature were compared between OM and YM in summer and winter. Sweating and acral blood flow responses were delayed in OM, with slight seasonal differences. 2) Sweating response to immersion of the legs in hot water (43 degrees C) was examined in the 4 groups in summer and winter. It was augmented in summer in all the groups, but least in OM. 3) The increase in local sweating response by daily 2-hr immersion of the left forearm in hot water for 14 days was compared among the 4 groups. The increase was less in OM than in YM. It was less in YF than in YM, but not different between OM and OF. The results suggest that the elderly are less adaptable to heat than the younger, especially in the male, due partly to less adaptability of the effector organs and partly to lessened adaptive change in the central activity.
