Abstract     In Slovenia there was only 5 years of undergraduate medical education till 1989 with only weeks curriculum for general practice. In 1989 a new undergraduate curriculum of 6 years was implemented with seven weeks of family medicine in the last year. The curriculum for family medicine is based on practical work with tutors in primary care all around the country. Tutors were educated at workshops last ten years. Once a week students come to the university in Ljubljana where they have small group sessions with very few lectures. Most of the time spent in group is oriented in teaching communication skills and introducing the holistic approach to patients and their families. Each student has an opportunity to role play a consultation with an actor which is video-recorded and then analysed in his group constructively and sensitively. In the second part of group work students prepare case reports of patients seen at their everyday work with their tutors. Each student prepares and introduces a seminary on a topic typical for family medicine (e.g. home visits, refrrals, prescriptions, prevention, etc.). During his work with a tutor each student analyses at least one three-generation family and prepares a written family profile.
