Abstract     The effect of anthropometric characteristics and special motor abilities on the performance in pole vault were established on a sample of eleven pole vaulters. The relationship of anthropometric variables with the criterion has shown that only the shoulder width and arm length are significantly related to the criterion. Anthropometric variables as a whole do not significantly affect the criterion. The correlation coeffient values prove that specific motor variables significantly affect the performance in pole vault. The strongest effect was found with the following variables: Running penta jump, the velocity of running with pole over last 10 m, long jump, flying 20 m run with the pole, standing triple jump, and flying 20 m run. These variables belong to the motor abilities necessary for the modern pole vaulting - fast and elastic power and maximal and absolute velocity. The differences in the space of predictor variables were obtained by means of simple analysis of variance. This method was used to verify the findings. The results have shown that no significant differences inanthropometric variables exist between the two groups of pole valters. Significant differences were found in the space of specific motor variables. The greatest differnces were established with long jump, running penta jump, flying 20 m run with the pole, the velocity of running with pole over last 10 m. Thus the conclusions on the relatinship and effect of specific motor variables on performance in pole vault were confirmed.
