Abstract     Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and are current constituents of the human body. Serous contamination with PCBs occurred in Bela Krajina (Slovenija). So far no data is available on the effects of long-term exposure to PCBs on tooth development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of long-term exposure to PCBs on developmental defects in dental enamel, the time of eruption of permanent teeth, caries and chipped or broken teeth. The study was also aimed at evaluating whether dental dentin may serve as a useful bioindicator of environmental pollution by PCBs. 202 8-14 year-old children who were pre-and post-natally exposed to PBCs in the contaminetd region of Bela Krajina, Slovenia, were studied. 202 controls from Bršljin were matched for age and sex. Risk assessment was based on the concentrations of toxic PCB congeners in tissues and diet (expressed in total toxic equivalents of 2,3,7,8-TCDD), and the duration of exposure. The prevalence of developmental defects of enamel was assessed using the FDI Index. The data were analyed using the SPSS 6.0 statistical software package. PCB levels in different samples were analysed by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC). Developmental defects of enamel in permanent teeth were found in 71.3% of exposed children, compared to 49.5% in the control group. The enamel was abormal in 21.9% of the permanent index teeth of exposed children and in 12.7% of the control children. The difference was statistically significant (hi power on 2 = 84.2; p <= 0.001), mostly on account of demarcated opcities and hypoplasia. The extent of the defects was also greater in the exposed group hi power on 2 = 61.3; p <= 0.00). No significant correlations were found between PCB-exposure and developmental defects in deciduous teeth.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
