Abstract     Wet lowland meadows, boggy or floonded, are one of Europe's fastest vanishing wildlife habitats. Drainage, mostly followed by intensification of agriculture, represents the main threat to their highly endangered plant and animal communities. In Slovenia there are very few such larger areas preserved: Ljubljansko barje, lake Cerknica, Planinsko polje, Reka-valley, Jovsi, parts of Pomurje. Some of them are of international importance for the populations of endangered bird species they support and are listed as IBAs (Important Bird Areas). A comparison and avaluation based on bird communities are given, as well as arguments for preservation. The biological diversity is much higher than in fully drained areas. Sustainable management and partial wetland restoration are proposed. Further drainage is not acceptable.
