Abstract     Between 1981-1995, breeding by the Moorhen Galinulla chloropus was studied by the author at Draga ponds in the southern part of Ljubljansko barje (Ljubljana Marshes). 25 nests were discovered during this period. It has been estimated that from 5 to 10 pairs bred there each year, which means that the breeding density ranged from 0.25 to 0.5 pair per ha. The average diameter of the nests was 19 cm, their cups averaging 6 cm in depth. the nests were on average 17 cm above the water surface, the depth of water varying from 30 to 80 cm. The eggs averaged 29.8 X 43.0 cm, their average weight reaching 18.9 g. The nests contained from 7 to 9 eggs. The average weight of four just hatched chicks was 14.5 g. Some nests were found ashore, but most were built above water. During the breeding period, the Moorhen is not disturbed by the nearness of the Little Grebe's or the Little Bittern's nests, while the shortest distance between the Moorhen's and the Coot's nests was no less than 50 m. The author believes that the Moorhen's population at Draga ponds is stable.
