Abstract     Although the technology of interventional devices has now improved to the point that more complex lesions can be approached with acceptable success rates and safety, recurrence of stenosis remains a major limitation. No matter how advanced and sophisticated a device might be, it achieves its goal only by creating a more or less controlled, yet always substantial injury to the vessel wall. The resulting healing process is directly related to the degree of the inflicted injury. This paper reviews the available clinical information about factors that affect restenosis rates, assesses the critical methodological issues of restenosis, and makes recommendations for current management. Some of the newer pharmacological trials for the prevention of restenosis are briefly described.
