Abstract     The author attempts to describe the psychological causes of the appearance of mistakes in general and analyses the situation in the field of medicine, which he compares with that in the field of aviation. In the conclusion the author states that in the future, education in the field of medicine will require greater orientation towards dealing with safety and error, as even the highly developed system of monitoring aviation reveals that (as in all systems) insufficiencies and errors still occur. However, people in aviation ty to live with them, are for the most part aware of them, are intentionally trained to recognise them and to become acquinted with them, and therefore potentially know how to avoid them. The author that doctors are not trained to tackle problems in the same manner. Due to the specificities of the structure of the human psyche and its cognitive processes, errors will always occur, and we must be prepared for them. The author supports his assertion that mistakes will be made in spite of top-quality education with examples, one from aviation and the other from medicine. Both cases clearly illustrate disturbances in the cognitive process, i.e. inherent defects of human inteligence, which can lead to errors and consequently to terrible accidents.
