Abstract     Besides specific demands in forensic medicine, autopsies maintain their value in pathology (morbidity and mortality studies, education, quality control of treatment, research, autopsies demanded by relatives, etc.). The reasons for declining number of autopsies are not justifiable. In spite of advancement in medical knowledge, all pathologic changes cannot be revealed by the clinical investigation. Therefore, there is discordance between clinical and autopsy diagnoses. Considering autopsy findings, the autopsies can be divided into six groups. There is complete concordance between clinical and autops diagnoses in the first group, in the second, autopsies reveal such changes, that have no influence on the treatment. In the third group, the changes could interfere with long-term treatment, and in the fourth, the treatment is not convenient due to false or mised diagnoses. In the fifth, the negligence and ignorance of medical staff may end with fatal autcome for the patient. In the sixth group, no pathologic changes can be found to explain the cause of death. Clinical documentation should always be available for all autopsies in pathology, and multidisciplinary clinic-pathologic conferences should be organised for all cases from the fourth and fifth group, and even for the third and sixth group. Adequate evaluation of autopsy findings demands co-operation between clinican and pathologist.
