Abstract     Clinician and pathologist should be aware of all factors affecting the quality of biopsies. Planning the biopsy, (contra)indications and expected results should be considered. Biopsy should be treated, neither as an laboratory investigation, nor as only one of the diagnostic tests. Pathologist is responsible for all the steps in biopsy procedure, from the receiving of the bioptic material to the final report. He must take in consideration also other sources of biopsy pitfalls (inadequate clinical documentation, unproper tissue fixation, cross-cut of surgical specimens, etc.). The quality of biopsies is assured by permanent collaboration of clinical and pathologist, from the planning of biopsy to its evaluation and interpretation, by a qualified staff and technical/laboratory facilities, and by a certain minimal number of biopsies of the same kind. To enhance the quality of biopsies and to enable the comparison of results, the protocols are put into force. They suggest the most appropriate use of routine and ancillary procedures (perfomed at the same institution), and minimal standards in gross and microscopic reports. The methods used should be standardised. All possible artefacts shoulc be considered in biopsy evaluation. The biopsy report is a combination of less or more objective description, and the diagnosis with differential diagnosis and final conclusion. The latter may include sugestion for further investigations. Complicated cases should be resolved by the help of other patholgists at home and abroad and with clinicans on clinicopathological conference.
