Abstract     Recent developments in the field of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) of newborns and children are described: changing indications, the use of new amino acid, lipid, vitamin and trace element preparations. The main complications of TPN are listed as well as their treatment. TPN remains the mainstay of supportive therapy in paediatric surgical patients and also in medical patients with severe gastrointestinal tract diseases. TPN makes possible normal growth and development of these children through many years.
