Abstract     A study on the codon usage of five phospholipase A2(PLA2) genes from Vipera ammodytes was done by using multivariate statistical analysis. The results revealed that: 1 The codon usage of the genes manifested apparent bias, preferring guanine (G) and cytosine (C) at the third base position. The GC content at the position (GC3) was about 70%. These results indicated that the genes evolved under GC mutational pressure, were located in the reverse band of the chromosome and GC rich region. 2 The "effective number of the condons (NV)" of the genes were 50.9 - 56.7. In the NC-plot, the genes (except ammodytin I2)lay on the upper part of the GC3 curve. The ammount of G was not equal to C at the third position of the codons. The results suggested that the synonymous codon usage bias was not only due to GC mutational pressure, but also might be influenced by the translation-selection action.3 Comparing the codon usage pattern with the expression genes from unicellular organisms, such as E. coli, B. subtilis, D. discoideum, S. pombe and S.cerevisiae, and high eukaryte, D. melanogaster, a common bias to codon TAC, TCC, ATC and GAC was observed. This is the first report about PLA2 gene codon usage pattern in the world.
