Abstract     We have used single and double transcranial magnetic stimulation in 9 right and 6 left handers, to evaluate functional organisation of the dominant and nondominant hemisphere. We have studied, for both hemisphere, relaxed and active motor threshold, central silent period duration and ipsilateral corticocortical inhibition and facilitation curve. No significant asymmetries were found in dominant and non-dominant motor areas in central silent period, relaxed and active thresholds in and between the two groups. Ipsilateral corticocortical inhibition and facilitation curve for right handed has shown an increase of inhibition in dominant motor area respect to the non dominant; nosignificant differences were seen in left handers. The comparison between the dominant and non-dominant motor areas of right and left handed have showed a global increase of inhibition in the right handed. We confirm the functional asymmetry in dominant vs non-dominant motor area in right handed; left handed do not show this. The neural organisation of left handers appears to function in a way entirely different from, and not specular to, that of right handers.
