Abstract     A diagnostic procedure is proposed predicting soon after the onset of the lesion which incomplete spinal cord injured (SCI) patients are candidates for a permanent use of functional electrical stimulation (FES). A classification tree, developed using a machine learning algorithm, indicates that the candidates for chronic use of FES are patients with weak ankle dorsiflexors and sufficently strog knee extensors. For these patients, FES of ankle plantar flexors applied during the toe-off phase can shorten the walking cycle duration and increase the angular excursions of the hip, knee, and ankle joint.
