Abstract     We developed a 3D computer model of the human brainstem, constituted by 5268 voxels, each corresponding to a microvalume of about 2x2x2 mm. We use this model in patients with brainstem focal lesions, for two applications, which are related but methodologically different. 1. Quantitative assessment of the anatomical-functional association between the site of the "anatomical lesion" (as defined by MR imaging) and symptomatology. 2. Anatomical reconstruction of the "functional lesion" on the basis of symptomatology. The functional assessment was supported by clinical examination and neurophysiological testing of brainstem function, including early and late blink reflex, early and late masseter inhibitory reflex, jaw jerk, brainstem auditory evoked potentials, and somatosensory evoked potentials.
