Abstract     A hundred-and eight electroenephalograms (EEGs) were obtained from 27 patients with newly-diagnosed epilepsy before the monotherapy with carbamazepine (CBZ), after seven days since the steady-state of the plasma concentration was achieved and repeated after one and six months and after one year of the treatment. Control group consisted of 50 EEGs from healthy volunteers. Two kinds of analyses were used: (1) band power and peak frequency values obtained from the first EEG were compared to the values obtained from the consecutive records for each patient, and (2) values from quantitative analyses for the above mentioned techiques of each separate EEG by means of Z-score were compared with normative data. The findings obtained from both analyses were compared to the degree of seizure control. There was no rational index that could be beneficially used for prognostic evaluation of the therapeutic success of the drug early after its introduction.
