Abstract     Unplanned pregnancies are becoming a serious health problem. An important factor in evaluation of the health of women is the appearance of abortion rates. With or without usage of contraception the occurrence of unplanned pregnancies changes considerably. The appearance of repeat abortion opens the way to the question if women use abortion as a fertility regulation method or as an emergency procedure when conraception fails. In the research characteristics were established and the efficiency of contraceptive methods among women with two or more legal induced abortions was measured. 213 contraceptive intervals, contributed in the period between 1.2.1992 and 1.2.1995 by 148 women of the representative sample of repeaters, age 19-44, in Ljubljana communities, were analysed. The research is a part of the interdisciplinary Fertility Survey, Slovenia 1993. The data were collected retrospectively by a questionnaire. Repeaters filled in an opinion poll about demographic, social and economic characteristics, contraceptive use and their standpoint in contraception and sexuality. The data were analysed by the descriptive analysis and discriminative analysis. The contraceptive use and average duration of contraceptive use were estimated by reproductive calendar method. The life table method was used to calculate the discrontinuation rates, contraceptive failure rates and reasons for termination of pregnancy in separate intervals. It was ascertained that after one year of exposure to eventual pregnancy, only 30,3% of women use contraception, one half of women (49,2%) use less reliable contraceptive methods and a quarter (25,9%) of those using more reliable contraceptive methods discontinue using them, because they are not satisfied with them.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
