Abstract     Autophagocytosis and apoptosis are two types of cellular degeneration processes. Regulation of autophagocytosis is very similar in all cell types and ensures reversible degeneration. Apoptosis is irreversible and its regulation seems to be different in different cell types. Developmentally determined programmed cell death also takes palce by apoptosis. Both types of degeneration are inducible in certain physiological conditions. Relationship between autophagocytosis and apoptosis is not yet clearly defined. Autophagic and apoptotic way of cell degeneration was analysed in two models of terminally differentiated cells. Degeneration was experimentally induced in mammary gland secretory epithelium and in photoreceptors. Both cell types are also characterised by apocrine secretion of apical plasmalemma, so attention was also paid to membrane traffic and secretory processes in the experimental conditons. Mammary gland degeneration was induced by decreasing the level of prolactin by bromocryptine treatment, and by removing the litter to prevent suckling. Bromocryptine treatment simulated conditions in which programmed cell death takes place, while accumulation of secretory product in the gland is known to induce apoptosis. Combination of both experimental conditions was applied to define the role of synthesis of the secretory products in apoptosis induction. Photoreceptor degeneration was induced by continuos illumination, and by treatment with dopamine agonist bromocryptine and adrenergic antagonist reserpine. Influence of continuos illumination was partly modified by application of adrenergic agonist isoproterenol.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
