Abstract     Due to its high rate of incidence and frequency of relapses the ulcer disease is being atached great importance. At present, effective drug treatment is available for practically all types of ulcer. For the drug management of the ulcer disease we employ drugs with cytoprotective properties (sucralfate, bismuth containing preparations, misoprostol) or drugs interfering with the gastric acid secretion (famotidine, ranitidine, cimetidine, omeprazole). Relapses are prevented by long-term administration of H2-receptor inhibitors, or sucralfate. In patients with Helicobacter pylori infeciton, prevention of recurrent ulcers may be achieved by eradicaiton of the organism. A uniform and ideal generally accepted therapeutical concept has not yet been found. Therapeutical options include various combinations of antiulceratives and antibiotics which exert similar efficacy but differ in their side effects profiles and the complexity of the therapeutical scheme. No major noovelties in the treatment of ulcer disease are expected in the near future.
