Abstract     Alzheimer's disease represents the most common form of late onset dementia, that develops over the age of 65 years. The early onset (presenile) forms of Alzheimer's disease are less common. The disease is characterized by progressive clinical course; the definite diagnosis is based on the histological demonstration of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in the brain after autopsy. The article presents a short review of the leading molecular hypothese of Alzheimer's disease and current pharmacotherapeutic prospects.
