Abstract		The antimicrobial combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole is active in vitro against varius gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Long-term use has led to the emergence of resistance in some bacteria. Clinically it is useful for treatment and prophylaxis of selected infections of the genitourinary, gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. It is indicated for most nocardia asteroides infections and is the antimicrobial agent of choice for therapy and prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Adverse reactions associated with the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in patients without HIV infection are rare. The drug is contraindicated for women who are pregnant.
Summary		Protimikrobna kombinacija trimetoprima in sulfametoksazola deluje in vitro na številne grampozitivne in gramnegativne bakterije. Dolgoletna uporaba je povzročila razvoj odpornosti pri nekaterih bakterijah. Zdravilo uporabljamo za zdravljenje in preprečevanje določenih okužb sečil, črevesja in dihal. Indicirana je za zdravljenje okužb povzročenih z Nacardia asteroides in je zdravilo izbora za zdravljenje in preprečevanje pljučnic povzročenih s Pneumocystis carinii. Pri bolnikih, ki niso okuženi z virusom HIV, trimetoprim-sulfametoksazol redko povzroča nezaželene stranske učinke. Trimetoprim-sulfametoksazola ne smemo uporabljati pri zdravljenju nosečnic.
