Abstract     Changes in microbial biomass nitrogen content in relation to soil amendment with plant residues were examined in a field experiment during winter and early spring period. The experiment included four treatments: 1. unamended bare soil; 2. soil supplement with N (260 kg/ha); 3. soil supplemented with corn straw (15000 kg d. m./ha); 4. soil supplemented with corn straw and nitrogen. Compound samples from the arable soil layer (0-30cm) were collected on five dates (from November 1995 to April 1996) and analysed for microbial biomass nitrogen (MB-N) and for 2N KC1 exchangeable mineral N. Estimations of microbial biomass N under field conditions indicate that decomposition of plant residue of a wide C:N ratio added to soil resulted in increased net amount of mineral N immobilized into microbial biomass by 50 to 10fold (up to 250 kg N/ha) compared to unamended soil. Persistence of newly synthetized microbial biomass was limited as it rapidly declined to the initial level in early spring, during the last few weeks of six month experiment.
