Abstract     Two examples of the use of 13C labelled tracers in the life sciences are presented where the isotopic composition of breath CO2 is analysed: the detection of Helicobacter pylori infection in the upper gastrointestinal tract and the study of carbohydrate oxidation during prolonged endurance exercise. In the first case, the diagnostic method is based on te capability of H. pylori to decompose urea so breath CO2 is enriched in 13C soon after the administration of the tracer to infected patients. The second example is the analysis of the variation of isotopic composition of breath CO2 due to changes in energetic substrate (muscle glycogen or blood carbohydrates) during prolonged endurance exercise.
