Abstract     Large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition requires decomposition of words into subword units which are defined according to some acoustic criteria. This paper discusses problems of definition and selection of these basic speech units. These units are usually defined according to the existing phonological and phonetic annotations. However, there are some difficulties in incorporating them into practical systems. The paper pays special attention tothe Slovenian vowel system and acoustic realisations of some approximants. A corps-based statistical analysis of speech formant characteristics was performed, andthe achieved results provide additional useful phonetic knowledge. The analysis was performed using the modified Speech Filing System software tools.
