Abstract     Large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition requires decomposition of worlds into sub-word units. On the other hand, text-tospech systems compose speech via a phonetic transcription of the text. The paper discusses problems of phonetic transcription and definiton of the corresponding basic speech units for the Slovenian language. Such units are usually defined according to the existing phonological and phonetic annotation system. However, when researchers develop a practical speech recognition/synthesis system they often notice that the conventional phonetic knowledge is not always statistically consistent. We had encountered the same problem with the Slovenian phonetics, therefore we decided to perform some additional corpus-based statistical analyses of Slovenian speech formant characteristics, with special attention to the Slovenian vowel system and acoustic realisations of some approximants. The analysis was performed using the modified Speech Filing System software tools.
