Abstract     Herpesviruses are the most frequent viruses in humans. Most members infect children in early infancy. After primary infection herpesviruses establish latent infection and persist for life. Reactivations are mild with exception in ummunocompromised persons as they may cause fatal complications. Basic approaches to laboratory diagnosis are direct examination of the specimen for virus, viral antigens, viral nucleic acids and serological diagnosis based on demonstrating specific antibodies. The detection of herpesvirus as the etiological agent is obvious before the administration of antiviral therapy.
