Abstract     The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18 infection in patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), referred for conisation. Among 135 patients, 7 (5.2%) had CIN 1, 45 (33.3%) CIN 2 and 83 (61.5%) CIN 3. The of the patients ranged from 20 to 69 years (mean +-SD = 33.3_-8.1 years). Before conisation, cytological material for in situ hybridization was obtained. Among all patients with CIN, 28 (21.9%) were HPV 16 and 20 (15.5%) HPV 18 positive. There were 40 patients (540%) positive for HPV 16 or HPV 18 and only 5 patients (6.8%) were positive for both viral types. There was one (14.3%) HPV 16 and one (14.3%) HPV 18 positive patient with CIN 1, 9 (22.5%) HPV 16 and 6 (14.6%) HPV 18 positive patients with CIN 2 and 18 (22,2%) HPV 16 and 13 (16.1%) HPV 18 positive patients with CIN 3. In patients with CIN 2 and CIN 3. HPV 16 and 18 infection was slightly more frequent than in patients with CIN 1, but the difference was not significant. There was also no significant difference in HPV 16 and 18 infection frequency between patients with CIN 2 and CIN 3 (chi-square = 0.004; p<0.05).
