Abstract | Materials and methods: Serum samples collected from adult patients (older than 15 years) hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, Ljubljana, from Marc 1996 to April 1997. We used complement fixation test (CF) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae specific antibodies. In our patients the criteria for acute infection included the presence of a CF antibody titre of 1 : 128, or a fourfold rise to >-128, a singnificant rise in the specific IgG antibody concentrations (cut off value- 50 U/ml) and the presence of specific IgM or IgA antibody concentrations (cut off values - 70 U/ml and 50 U/ml, respectively). Results: We included 211 patients and tested 152 paired and 59 single serum samples. Thirteen patients, four males and nine females, with the average age of 42 years, were classified as acutely infected according to the criteria. Only one patient fulfilled all criteria of acute infection. Conclusions: A combination of CFT and ELISA for determination of specific IgM and IgA antibodies ensures better diagnosis of acute primary infection or reinfection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae. | |
