Abstract     We studied the occurrence of human intestinal parasites in stool specimens from patients of the area of Ljubljana. From January 1996 to December 1997, 1520 patients (670 children and 850 adults) without acute diarrhoea were examined for intestinal parasites. Stool samples were examined for protozoa and helminiths by a direct iodine wet mount preparation, two permanent stains, by immunofluorescence reaction (Merifluor C/G, Meridian Diagnostic) and by Loerincz concentration flotation method. The parasites were recovered from 53 (3.5%) samples of patients; in 37 (5.5%) children and in 16 (1.9%) adults. Protozoan parasites were found in 46 (3.0%) patients and helminths in 7 (0.5%) patients. No significant differences were found between the patients in regard to their sex. The results of this study show that the most frequent parasite in all examined patients was Cryptosporidium parvum (in children 18; 2.9% and in adults 8; 0.9%) and that the children are three times more frequently infected by parasites than the adults.
