Abstract     For development of strains for production of clavulanic acid the strategies were used which ensure high, stable and economical production. The knowledge of biology of species Streptomyces clavuligerus, organisms's life cycle and biochemical pathway of clavulanic acid led to isolation of various mutant types of which the mutants with deregulated arginine synthesis are especially important. Due to a great number of mutants, for determination of clavulanic acid we introduced a highly capable analytical method SIA. Isolated strains were characterised morphologically, genetically and biochemically, and on a laboratory scale of shaked culture their cultivation conditions were optimised. With strains which in their characteristics fulfilled the criteria for cultivation on a larger scale, optimisation on a semi-industrial scale was performed in bioreactors of a 50 to 500 l volume. We determined optimum age and quantity of inoculum and cultivation conditions (composition of media, feeding up, parameters of bioprocess conduct). Optimum cultivation conditions were transferred into 90.000 l bioreactors, to an industrial scale.
