Abstract     Internationaly compatable quality of laboratory diagnosis of zoonoses and animal infectious diseases, important for international trade of animals and products of animal origine, is important factor in Slovenian joining EU. Preconditions for good laboratory diagnostics are suitable anamnesis, correct sampling and sample transport. For laboratory work suitable premises, equipment and experts are necessary. Laboratories must have a system of quality assurance and quality control. It includes calibration of equipment, validation of methods, use of reference strains and substances, control of environmental influences, permanent education of experts, quality control and proficiency testing. Reporting of results and their interpretation must include the incertainty of methods. Laboratories can gain an international accreditation. Feed-back from field veterinarians gives them aditional control of their work. It keeps them in-formed about emerging problems and enables them for their solution. Suitable laboratories are necessary also for education of laboratory experts needed to join EU.
