Abstract     Presence and properties of different coagulase positive staphyloccoci (CPS) on the canine skin with simple or reccurent pyoderma were examined. Among 148 CPS isolated from inflammation proceses on skin and mucosal membranes three different species were isolated. S. intermedius was determined in 118 (79.72) cases and it was the most frequent organism. S. aureus was determined in 25 16.89%) cases and S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans only in 5 (3.38%) cases. Only morfological differentiation among species were not valuable because of high resemblance, so biochemical and genetic methods were necessary. All strains were evaluated both conventional methods and the API-STAPH system (BioMerieux). The API-STAPH system correctly identified almost all the strains and was acceptable alternative to conventional methods for identifying of canine skin staphylococcal isolates. In ACCUPROBE test we got positive results only with S. aureus strains while all strains of S. intermedius were negative. Strains of S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans gave us relative high values (that can show us a higher degree of genetic relationshi with S. aureus), but under the cut-off value and we considered them as negative.
