Abstract     Fluoranthene - a model 4 ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon was chosen for degradation pathoway study with the Mycobacterium sp. PYR-1 (AM) and Pasteurella sp. IFA (B-2) strains. The stable degradation products of both bacteria were quantitatively determined after 8, 10 and 14 days of incubation in neutral and acidic ethylacetate extracts before and after derivatisation. Metabolic product were identified using thin layer chromatography, gas cromatography, tandem mass spectrometry and gas chromatography with mass selective detection (GC-MS). The results showed that of total fluoranthene almost one half (AM) and one fourth (B-2) was biodegraded in an aqueous mineral media during 14 days incubation at room temperature. During this period the bacteria were capable of mineralisins four fifths (AM) and two thirds (B-2) of the biodegraded fluronathene to CO2, while one fifth (AM) and one third (B-2) remained as stable metabolic products. Two metabolites (9-fluorenone-1-carboxylic acid and 9-fluorenone) were identified by GC-MS directly, while the metabolites 9-fluorenone-1-carboxylic acid, 9-hydroxyfluorene, 9-hydroxy-1-1fluorene-carboxylic acid, 2-carboxybenzaldehid, benzoic acid and phenylacetic acid were determined in their derivatised forms. From the identified metabolites a fluoranthene biodegradation pathway was proposed for both bacteria.
