Abstract | Changes in nitrifying community structure in response to different prevailing ammonium concentrations (50, 500, 1000, 3000 mg/l), pH values (6.0, 7.0, 8.2) and oxygen levels (1%, 7%, 21%) were studied in experimental reactors containing bacterial community from a waste water. Denaturing gradient del electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR products obtained using ammonia oxidizer specific rDNA primers revealed large community structure shift induced by high ammonium levels and was reversible once the ammonium was returned to its original low level. The changes in community structure brought about by both pH extremes, however were irreversible. Ribosomal DNA sequence analysis revealed that high ammonium and deviating pH environments stimulated growth of ammonia oxidizer strains that are substantially different from their nearest relatives, Nitrosomonas eutropha C-91 in Nitrosomonas europaea. | |
