Abstract     Organic substrate utilization efficiency with different biotic oxidants has an impact on the cycling rates of nutrients in environments as well as on the competitive abilities of an organism. Growth yields with O2 or NO3-, as terminal electron acceptors, were studied in experiments with pure cultures of selected denitrifying bacteria (Achromobacter cycloclastes, Flavobacterium sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas stutzeri). Biomass yield measured as cell protein per amount of electron acceptor consumed was used as a measure of efficiency of individual electron acceptor. In A. cycloclastes and P. stutzeri the efficiency of respiration with the nitrogenous oxides was about 70% as compared to O2 respiration (Yo2 = 100%). Denitrification efficiency in Flavobacterium sp. and P. fluorescens was lower and was only about 40% and 20% of that with oxygen respiration, respectively. Bacterium A. cycloclastes was the most efficient in energy conservation of the four microorganisms studied regardless of the terminal electron acceptor used.
