Abstract     In the Maribor Veterinary Laboratory, 902 cat and dog hair and skin scraping samples were examined for dermatophyte Microsporum canis in the years 1989 to June 1998, as well as five samples taken from the habitat of the animals. All the samples were tested for M.canis by using the cultural examination method. In this method jSabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol was incubated at 26 and 37 degrees Centigrade. In the last year of research actidion was being added, what increased the certainty of dermatophyte isolation considerably. The results showed that M. canis is more present in cats than in dogs. Of 450 examined cat samples M.canis was isolated in 85 cases (19%), of 452 examined dog samples 32 tests (7%) turned out positive. In habitants M.canis was isolated three times. The number of positve M.canis samples is increasing and its more cats that are infected. In majority of cases epizootiological situation has not been analysed. Samples were delivered to the laboratory because animals developed skin problems or their owners suffered from dermatophytosis. Since the number of M.canis infections in human seems to rising a closer surveillance of every sample specially every positive sample is needed.
