Abstract     Escherichia coli strain KS533, serotype K1:H7 was isolated from a patient suffering from an urinary tract infection. The strain harbours a 145 kb large conjugative plasmid pRK100. The plasmid encodes the aerobactin-uptake system, recently described transposon Tn5431 with ampicillin and tetracycline resistance determinants and the colicins V and Ia. It carries two replication regions RepFIC and RepFIB and is therefore a member of the incompatibility group IncF1. The conjugational transfers of the pRK100 and the related F factor, having an additional rep region RepFIA, were compared. pRK100 has a more narrow host range and it can not be transferred into Salmonella typhimurim in contrary to the F factor. The three dolcins of the strain KS533, Co1V, Co1 Ia and Co1K, are also very important. The gene cluster encoding Co1K is integrated into the chromosomal kup gene in contrary to Co1V and Co1Ia, which are placed on pRK100 in near proximity of the transposom Tn5431.
