Abstract     In order to prevent the nosocomial infections we studied the permeability of sterile latex gloves (Ansell Gammex) for rotaviruses and adenoviruses. When handling gastroenteric patients, further spreading of infectious agent has to be prevented. We wanted to determine if ten minutes interval is sufficient for transmission of virus from patient through gloves to the nurse. After the usual protocol of washing hands, a smear from nurse's hands was taken. A sterile pair of gloves was used. When the work on the patient with confirmed rotavirus infection was finished, gloves were removed, inverted and fingertips filled with 1.5 ml of virus transport medium. The second smear sample was taken from the hands. In the laboratory the gloves were suspended in an empty jar. After 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 min 100 ul samples were taken from each fingertip. Two series of samples were collected. We examined negatively stained samples in the transmission electron microscope. The second series was tested with ELISA test. Smears prior to handling were positive for adenoviruses 40/41. All finger samples were positive for rotaviruses after 5 minutes. Presented study confirms that viruses are able to penetrate the gloves within 5 minutes. Spreading and outburst of infection inside a hospital is possible.
