Abstract     In the year 1997 a new methodology of the hospital data follow-up was introduced at the Institute of Public Health, including a set of innovations which are adjusted with the World Health Organization and the Europe Union proposals. The most important innovation is collecting hospital statistic's data, according to 'episodes', representing hospital treatment of one in-patient on the particularly specialty ward during one hospitalization. Together with other innovations linked with the new data-set we shall in future succeed in assuring the differentiation of hospital treatments into day-care and hospitalizations, we shall assure the uniform presentation of hospitalizations and hospital wards activity in particular specialties of all Slovenian hospitals, the uniform presentation of the hospital treatments according to the individual diagnoses and differentiation of the first and refeated admissions due to the same disease. With collecting, controlling and processing the 1997 date we were confronted with a series of problems, which were first of all the result of the ponuniform organisation approach in Slovenian hospitals, and somewhere they were the result of the insufficient comprehension of the new methodology as well. A lot of information is based on health statistics data which contribute to the health care planning and development decisions, so much more attention is needed to be devoted to these problems. This is the only way which can step by step lead to the data quality improvement and resulting higher appreciation of health statistics.
